Anthology of traditional songs, speaking about society and politics in Sicily between thirteenth and twentieth centuries.

“In the history of Sicily, the people have chosen different strategies to survive while mainteining the dignity.

In some moments the strategy was fighting together against the stranger oppressor, like in the Vespro revolt, in 1282; in others the choice was going up in the mountains becoming bandits, us the only way to rebel oneself to the submission to iniquitous laws.
In some cases the strategy was tenaciously standing the inhuman conditions of working in the mines or in the fields; in others the choice was coragiously taking up all together, to occupy the fields that should be divided among the poor workers.
From the enthusiasm for Garibaldi’s wishes to unify the State of Italy, to the delusion of all the difficulties born from the unity, and then the desire of independence, and the second world war with the final arrival of the Americans, like the umpteenth stranger...
The testimonies arrived through oral tradition, in the people language, of all these moments, can be listened like a single cantata, that shows how, in some way, at least a part of the people have always
proudly reacted, with determination, to every kind of tyranny, and they will always react.

Dedicated to the mothers, strong and tenacious, that even after seeing their sons killed by the mafia,
keep on bearing, head-high, the flag of the downtrodden people.”

Attraverso la ricerca, il recupero e la rielaborazione dei canti della tradizione siciliana che appartengono alla sfera politico-sociale, si è voluto indagare su quel frammento di cultura popolare che riguarda la visione e l’elaborazione del mondo da parte del popolo siciliano, attraverso i canti.
Tracciando un excursus temporale che si apre con la rivoluzione del Vespro siciliano nel tredicesimo secolo e arriva alle lotte operaie degli anni settanta, passando per il fenomeno del brigantaggio, la caduta dei Borboni e l’unità d’Italia, la riforma agraria e il movimento di occupazione delle terre, la strage di Portella della Ginestra, si vuole testimoniare come il popolo siciliano esprima nei canti l’auto-narrazione e la riflessione sul sociale, la politica, sulle condizioni di vita e sulla protesta, sul cambiamento e sul ristagno della situazione.
Da questo lavoro emerge una grande attenzione alla sfera pubblica da parte della gente siciliana, contrapposta alla consueta immagine di un popolo prevalentemente richiuso nella sfera privata

La tirannia nelle sue varie facce è protagonista di questi canti, che raccontano le vicende storiche e sociali, a volte con lo spirito combattivo dei ribelli, a volte con la rassegnazione dei sottomessi, a volte con la lucidità dei militanti.

La rielaborazione dei canti è fedele agli originali, per quanto riguarda l’aspetto testuale e melodico, con in più la presenza di strumenti di accompagnamento, la chitarra, il tamburello, e un carattere nuovo, che i canti acquistano, o in alcuni casi fortunati forse “riconquistano”, grazie all’atto del cantare.
